Many reasonable assumptions about Thunderbirds Are Now! turn out to be false. I didn’t realize that there was no female vocalist in the band until the day of this interview-in fact, Ryan Allen isn’t a girl, he just happens to sing like one sometimes. And with TAN!’s recent signing to Frenchkiss and their unabashedly Les Savy Favish new-wave licks, you might automatically want to locate them in Brooklyn-not so, they’re holding it down in Detroit and currently have no plans to leave. They rewrote their spaz-punk playbook to allow for more dance-pop sounds on their awesome second record, Justamustache, which evinces a songwriting quantum leap from their disjointed debut.
