The Twenty-Twos

I was disappointed when the Twenty-Twos‘ set was canceled due to the Annex not being ready to open last Saturday. I settled into Motor City for the night with some friends in a nice cushy seat, camera bag at my feet, perfect vantage point to watch people swarm Luke Wilson and Zach Braff. However when I heard that Jasper had given the Twenty-Twos a home at Piano’s at midnight, I abandoned my post (never to be seen again, it was a Saturday, also please refer to aformentioned star-fucking) and headed up the block.

I’ll be damned if that wasn’t the best eight bucks I’ve dropped on a ticket in recent memory. It was one of the most cohesive sets I’ve ever witnessed- each band member staked their claim on stage, yet only enough to play off of the others. Lead guitarist Jenny Christmas shared vox duties with Terrah on keyboards, while bassist Hannah and Jonny on drums chimed in with their own opinions. The Twenty Two’s full bodied sound is raw yet lovely. It flooded the room and hit the back wall, and totally left the audience wanting more.

This gig served up loads of girl/ girl back to back guitar playing, and a keyboardest that got so into it her pigtails whipped around her face in ecstasy. You also get a drummer that’s not about to fade into the background and is clearly enjoying being the only guy in the band, and a bassist that knows how to move and toss the hair to the full effect. The best part, after the great tunes, is that they simply were happy to be playing which totally carried over into the audience. Isn’t that what it’s all about? They’re on tour now, so go.
