Who are you?
We are The Whip, that’s me [Bruce] and Danny, who between
us record and write all things Whip. I really love Danny, and we’ve worked together for a long time. It gets easier to get stuff done when you are used to working like a machine together, but we are a machine with a soul like the Tin Man at the end of The Wizard of Oz. When we go out live we have Fee on drums and Nath on bass who are mint.
Where do you come from?
We live in Manchester, which is a great place to be in a band at the moment. There are so many good nights up here. Last weekend we played Homoelectric, which is this anything-goes kind of club night. We had a great time. It was a good example of how things are mish-mashed together these days, you don’t have to sound like one straight-up genre. The lines are allowed to overlap more these days which is much more exciting, there’s much more unique sounds to make your ears pick up out there. Anyways, we met at college at 15 and played in bands together for ages.
How does being from Manchester affect your sound?
I think being from Manchester makes you raise your game cause there are so many good bands from here that to stand out you really try hard to put something decent out there. There is a cool heritage from our town but it’s good to keep things moving forward. There are still too many old school attitude and swagger types walking around. Our motto is attitude not gratitude. We’ve tried being all tough in the past and you don’t do anyone favors.
Best band from Manchester ever?
Either 808 State (we did a cover of “In Yer Face” in our old band. It sounded all right) or New Order – so many good songs.
What’s the biggest difference between Nylon Pylon and The Whip?
The Whip is much more focused. We know what we want to do now. A few years ago, people heard synths and guitars together and thought I like it but what the fuck is it? Regardless of that, like I said The Whip’s more focused and simpler. We also have a better beat to our stuff and better songs. Oh yeah and the drummer is usually a girl called Fee who is the bestest!
Words to describe your sound?
Dirty, sleasy, tough, soft… (ooops, have to finish later. xoxoxo)
Words NOT to describe your sound?
Sedated, clean, vegetable, virginial.
