FRESH MEET: INVASION
WORDS: MARISA BRICKMAN
What is the soundtrack for the ultimate invasion?
Haha, the ultimate invasion might be some kind of intergalactic showdown, so I guess it would have to be some intense multi-layered choral craziness like in 2001: A Space Odyssey. That should have the necessary gravitas! Or Slayer.
What is the most overlooked genre of music that deserves attention?
I almost don’t want to give it away, but in my opinion it’s totally space rock! Early ‘70s space rock was amazing and super cool. It’s heavy but not too much to handle, it’s repetitive and dancey and sounds great on drugs. It’s one genre that hasn’t been plundered much and when it’s done well, everyone will dig it. Check out hip kids Titan and Danava in the US. They know what time it is (1971)!
If you could add any element to your sound that’s not already there, what would you do?
I’m DESPERATE for a ‘70s style sci-fi space warrior keys player. Anyone that can twiddle knobs and looks cool would do. Put down the ‘80s synth and get in touch.
What is the most appropriate behavior at an Invasion show?
Politeness with some random freaking out and sporadic drunken head-banging. Open-minded Dungeons and Dragons nerds should apply.
What kind of venue best suits the kind of music you play?
We do go down really well to rock crowds ‘cause we bring the riffs. Hip but heavy shows are best but I have no really preferences as to where as long as the vibe is nice. A forest would be fun. Or a beach.
What is your favorite effect pedal?
I’m all about my BOSS Heavy Metal 3 because it’s really chunky and defines my sound. I’m still looking for the pedal that does all the Flash Gordon noises that I hear in my head. I know it’s out there and it’s quite fun looking. A lot of people are creating crazy custom pedals that are wired up wrong on purpose. That’s cool stuff.
Best and worst things about the London music scene right now?
I dunno. There is a definite cool scene which you need to get into if you’re going to break through quickly. I don’t mind that but it’s a little less open-minded than it should be if it’s going to stay fresh. That’s not sour grapes ‘cause we’re doing well, but a general observation. Many of these guys are good and are DJing a variety of stuff but less inclined to book a variety of bands. Also, there is a SERIOUS lack of decent and cool heavy bands. That will change when the post-hardcore kids get wise to their dead scene.
