Joker is a very hard man to pin down. ’SUP ventured to Bristol to meet Joker at his home where he lives with his mom (who calls him Liam). Joker seemed a little surprised to find us at his door. Nevertheless, we captured Joker on film in the two environments where he feels at home: his bedroom, where he produces music and his neighborhood, where he rides his BMX. Throughout the day Joker was fielding calls on his three mobile phones. Joker is both a man of mystery and a man of many talents.
Initially introduced in the grime world, but then quickly taken under the dub-step wing, the 19-year-old refuses to be pigeonholed. Joker first came to the fore last year with “Grimey Princess” and “Gully Brook Lane,” released on Earwax and Plastician’s label Terrorhythm respectively. Since then he has gained gushing plaudits from music press and Hyperdub label boss Kode 9 pronounced him his protégé on BBC Radio One’s show Generation Bass. He is even referred to as the Dr. Dre of dub-step. 2009 stands to be the year of the Joker. —Josh Jones
