Le Poisson Rouge, one of our fave venues in its own right, operates a gallery adjacent to the performance space. Granted our usual method of entry usually involves running late, crossing our fingers that an someone with a guestlist can rescue us from the inevitably long line, and then tearing down the stairs to secure a spot for a killer live gig. The upcoming opening for David Ellis‘ Recollect show, however, has given us pause. On November 10th Ellis will present three new wall sculptures in his ongoing “Recollection” series. The works will be constructed with more than 1,000 record sleeves systematically arranged by color and theme. The result is a resin-encased block of recorded history that seemingly levitates. Additionally, a three-part installation of massive spiraling clouds, constructed entirely of records, will be installed across the walls of the gallery. A recent motion painting will also be on view.
The event will be accompanied by a free show in the main space featuring live performances by Prefuse 73 (a ‘SUP alum from back in the day) and MIX HELL with a dj set by Jon Hopkins. If you aren’t familiar with MIX HELL’s brand of Grindcore / Tropicalia / Ghettotech, brace yourself. Iggor and Laima Cavalera are a husband-and-wife dance music group from Sao Paolo, Brazil and are about to hit the road with Soulwax in Europe. We hear their live show is pretty spectacular. In it, the duo both DJ, side-by-side, playing their own edits and enhancing the records they play with original percussion they’ve recorded themselves, triggered by an MPC. But what makes them really stand out is when Iggor leaves his turntables and gets behind his drum kit, which he prefers to play in the middle of the dance floor. He’s kind of experienced in that area: at the age of 15 he founded Sepultura with his brother Max, going on to sell over 15 million albums and being heralded as one of the greatest heavy metal drummers of all time. Now he’s being championed by James Murphy. Now that’s versatile. See you on the dance floor!
