‘SUP is pretty psyched to team up w/ Terrorbird for a party at one of our fave venues Cakeshop. While most people will be walking up the crowded sidewalks of Ludlow street in the glaring light of day, we’ll be scarfing down treats in the basement of a vegan bakery, getting our mind blown by bands illuminated only by christmas lights (and hope that you will too). Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to CMJ 2009!
Tempo No Tempo (s/r) – 12:30 PM
Not gonna front: at first we were planning on rolling out of bed early to snag the free cupcakes and vodka Red Bulls to face the music- but then we got the lineup and it looks like we won’t be needing an extra kick after all. Tempo No Tempo start it up with lean, hooky post-punk with jittery guitars and a bit of dub.
Tempo No Tempo : Medicines by SUPMAG
Turbo Fruits (Fat Possum) – 1:20 PM
Ever wondered what happened to Be Your Own Pet when Jemina exploded and left the building once and for all? Ta-dah! Ecstatic Peace wunderkids from Tennessee that swing from the ceiling… literally.
Turbo Fruits : Trouble! by SUPMAG
Silver Starling (Last Gang) – 2:10 PM
Take every heart-warming Canadian or Swedish large scale folk pop party band of the past 4 years, remove the element that makes you feel like punching someone, and you will have the truly exquisite Silver Starling.
Silver Starling : Ghosts by supabz
ZAZA (Kanine) – 3:00 PM
A heavy, ethereal Ride-infuenced Brooklyn duo that nuzzle up between Pains of Being Pure at Heart and the Warlocks; or simply “music to make out to.”
ZAZA : Sooner or Later by SUPMAG
Warpaint (Manimal) – 3:50 PM
Equal parts psychedelia soundscape, haunting folk, and primal rock drive drifting over dreamy 3 part vocals and off-kilter guitars. That’s a lot of adjectives to digest… just trust us on this one.
Warpaint : Billie Holiday by supabz
Darlings (Famous Class) – 4:40 PM
Catchy, dirty, ramshackle pop from one of NY’s best kept secrets (so far) – def a hotly tipped act this CMJ. Tightly woven songs about crowdsurfing and eviction parties = AMAZING. Plus they are blissfully free of the fuzzed out reverb nonsense that sounds like you’re covering Talking Heads songs underwater.
Darlings : Eviction Party by supabz
The Black Hollies (Ernest Jenning Record Co.) – 5:30 PM
Straight outta Jersey City, these freak beat soul scenesters never to fail to bring down the house- all that needs to happen now is for the world to figure out how awesome they are. Please join us, and stick around for the Kanine Records showcase! The more chances to check out ZAZA on the same stage in one day, the better.
