We know, we might as well rename this joint Little Boots Magazine, but what can we say? It’s been a while since we’ve fallen so head-over-heels in love with a pop artist. While she’s only recorded a handful of tracks, Blackpool, UK’s Little Boots completely slayed the audience at Studio B on Friday for our joint party with FIXED!. The last time we saw the Boots live was during this past year’s abysmal CMJ Music Marathon, where had it not been for her and Roisin Murphy we would have just planted ourselves by the nearest open bar and called it a week. Those performances entertained, but lacked the sparkle and shimmer of instant classics like “Meddle” and “Stuck on Repeat”, but Friday night saw her go full throttle with the space-age-Kylie-meets-Barbarella vibe that has set her appart from acts like Lady Gaga and cemented her status as a true innovator.
Let us be frank: we adore all other tunes but it’s “Mathermatics”, even more-so than the already ubiquitous “Stuck on Repeat”, that shows her true potential as both a musician and an amazing pop songwriter, on par with modern greats like Cathy Dennis and Max Martin. If you can even believe it, the live version is actually replacing “Stuck on Repeat” in our hearts (‘SUP’s #1 Track of 2008, let’s not forget), what with the high-octane breakdown towards the end. If this is what Little Boots is putting out before even recording an album, could she effectively deliver 2009’s summer hit? Nothing is impossible.
