Here at ‘SUP HQ, we love a pop star. And we’re not talking some faux-indie, synth-plonking, hipster “pop” star: we’re all about kids who grew up dancing to Yaz, revere the Pet Shop Boys, and are waiting to snatch the proverbial crown straight off Gaga’s bleach-blonde noggin. Toronto’s Diamond Rings is one of those kids.
Where our other current pop obsession, Penguin Prison, takes his cues from Michael Jackson and Prince’s ’80s sex-funk, Diamond Rings’ inspirations lies more with the British side of things–hints of The Human League, Gary Numan, and Heaven 17 color “Show Me Your Stuff”, a single so infectious it should be quarantined, anchored by a house-influenced piano riff that the SSION would be proud of. The video takes place in a spooky high school gymnasium, complete with smoke machines, sequined basketball jerseys, and a cameo from one Damian “Pink Eyes” Abraham from Toronto hardcore heroes Fucked Up. Perhaps if our school P.E. program had looked like this, we would have actually participated, instead of reading Sylvia Plath in the locker room for two periods (real talk).
We randomly met Diamond Rings (a.k.a. John O) at this year’s GayBiGayGay at SXSW, and immediately gave him a Hello feature in ‘SUP 22 without asking too many questions. We were so right. Keep your eyes peeled for it later this month…
