What does a Cold War Kid sound like?
In making our music, we try and find that spot that is not necessarily cross genre, but somewhat indefinable [therein] making the sound ours. I know that the band always thinks that every song sounds like something different, so we're all going to [reference] something a little different.
One person might say American roots music, while the other guy thinks it sounds sort of soulful. One band member might approach it as a punk song.
Who came up with the band name Cold War Kids?
I came up with the band name a few years ago when I was in Eastern Europe at one of those statue parks where they dumped all the statues after the cold war. You could climb on them, and act like you were at a playground. I felt like we were cold war kids, and the name just stuck.
Is there a bidding war currently under way for your debut record? And when can we expect it to be released on Disney Records (just kidding, but they do have a lot of money)?
It's likely that Cold War Kids will be signed in the near future. I wouldn't say that there's a bidding war going on. We're just trying to get things in the head office sorted out, and hopefully we'll have a full-length record out before you know it.
Where was the Cold War Kids' first show? And was anyone there besides your respective mothers?
Our mothers weren't there. They probably would have tried to talk us out of this lifestyle if they were. Our first show was at a house party in Fullerton, CA.
What inspires the band besides women and alcohol?
Seeing as much of the world as possible I suppose. We all read quite a bit. Walking is good for the soul. Meeting people and listening to their adventures is also good.
Spin Magazine.com said "singer Nathan Willet is as comfortable in Jack White's fake English accent as he is in Jeff Buckley's wounded castrato." Does it make you want to punch Spin Magazine for saying Willet doesn't have testicles?
Ha! No. I think castrato is some kooky Italian or Latin word. I should ask my brother if it's an insult. He teaches high school Latin at Cal High. I'm sure Spin was intending to be nice fellows for saying such words.
