Introduce yourselves.
Hello, we are Dead Disco. No, we aren't really dead and we don't like the Bee Gees very much either (although ABBA are pretty good). Victoria wails and plays keys and synths and jumps around like Katie Melua's evil twin. Marie's the multi-tasker, she plays bass and sings and triggers samples and wears red lipstick all at once! Lucy plays guitar like a female Billy Idol, but better.
How's Leeds?
Interesting. Everyone's having a massive orgasm over Leeds at the minute, which is pretty good but at the same time you do kind of feel like you have a bit more to prove so your not just another lot on the New Yorkshire bandwagon. The standard of music in the city is very high at the minute, but all the bands doing well in Leeds are so different. People like Forward, Russia!, O Fracas, iLiKETRAiNS, and Duels. It's really inspiring and everyone helps each other out by going to each other's gigs. There's always someone to ask for advice. Being on the last Dance To The Radio compilation made us feel a bit more accepted into that scene, although being a Leeds band doesn't make it an easy ride at all you still have to work really hard, if not harder.
What makes Dead Disco tick?
An ALARM clock!?! Sorry, erm Nandos, Romy & Michelle's High School Reunion, emo kids, nachos, gluwein, Neil Buchananon from Art Attack, Jem and The Holograms, free make-up, record deals. Oh yeah, and writing songs and gigging!
What's the best pop song of all time?
Bonnie Tyler, "Total Eclipse of the Heart".
What makes a good pop song?
Frizzy hair and big strings.
You're writing new songs right now - how's that going? What is motivating and influencing you?
It's going pretty well. It's hard as two thirds of us are finishing fine art degrees so its pretty hectic, but we're looking forward to June when we can really get into it. We've been listening to a lot of No Doubt and Victoria's been getting into Panic! at the Disco - some would say a
bit too much! But we have a really broad range of influences. One of the ways we seem to be heading is using less of an electro/synthesizer vibe and getting more natural piano
and organ sounds involved, as well as sci-fi spacey noises.
Why'd you sack the keytar?
Our manager made us. Its not fair, Shy Child has one.
Is there room for another "Disco" band (as in ShitDisco, Panic! at the Disco, Eskimo Disco, Simian Mobile Disco, etc...).
They all copied us. We thought of it first. Honest.
