PLUXUS A SOLID STATE KOMPAKT RECORDS WORDS BY: JENN PITCHERS |
Until very recently I have been the sort of avid music fan that tended to roll around in gleeful, intolerable misery as they repeatedly listened to their favourite lyric that moved them, probably because it collaborated variants of the words love and pain. And most music generated from a computer was simply a no-no. But no more! You see I moved into a new house with it’s own resident dj and since then he has been educating me in the ways of some of the filthiest drops and basslines I’ve ever heard in my life. In fact, so filthy I’ve started calling close friends ‘mate’ and shouting ‘Oi Oi!’ whilst still ashamedly sentient. But this contradiction in states is confusing. And then along came Pluxus. A curious mix of the darkness I’ve heard emanating from said flatmates room, and the beauty and heart in the music I so cherish. Never heard of Pluxus before, but this was a real treat. I was at risk of passing them off as wishy washy soundscape music, but then I realised my iTunes was full of the likes of Spacemen 3, My Bloody Valentine, Kraftwerk (a notable influence) and other fine examples of big noise landscapes and realised they shouldn’t be passed off anywhere near so detrimentally. From Sweden, this group make appropriately pure, clean layers of noise over delightfully inappropriate scraping grits. These experimental additions are what give this album its depth, directing your focus throughout. The tempo is mellow and distinctively nocturnal, it would be my 5am album of choice. Never mind The Knife, there are other Swedes who deserve attention and some accolades.
