We find the music of Underworld a force to be reckoned with. Capable of invoking the rawest of emotions, it also has the ability to spur creativity- the soundtrack to many an all-nighter in studios around the world. All in all, it's over two decades of powerful sh*t. It was only natural then that the band take it's creative partnership with design collective Tomato to the next level: happenings, or 'Art Jams' if you will.
You say Tomato? Yes, yes we do. Not the kind you eat- the name is in reference to the family of (sub)beta hormones - T/ 0.m / T 0. This hormone grouping is found within the cerebral cortex of people who are susceptible to vision, waking dreams, sensations and feelings of weightlessness. Now if you're wondering where 'Sup obtained that knowledge, it's because we're cool enough to have copies of Mmm...Skyscraper I Love You and Process on our very own bookshelf. Anyway, Tomato was founded in 1991 by Underworld's own Karl Hyde along with John Warwicker and 7 other abstract thinkers. Their project roster is staggering, but it's their latest that we are most interested in:
Beautiful Burnout is basically a lush multimedia extravaganza that layers sound (duh), macrophotography, video, film, painting, images and text. It will be on display at the Jacobson Howard Gallery in New York City August 1st through 15th. Check the live webcam if you can't make it. They're also involved in the Art of Peace Foundation, contributing a track entitled To Heal. They'll be headlining the All Points West Music and Arts Festival on August 8th with Radiohead. Commence passing out from anticipation of what is sure to be an epic set!
